Excerpt
Presley, dressed smartly in a fuchsia skirt and floral-print blouse and a pair of peep-toe kitten heels, wrapped her folded hands around her knee to keep her leg from bobbing up and down like a sewing machine needle. She was overcaffeinated, thanks to a virtually sleepless night, but when in¬spiration had struck, she hadn’t wanted to waste a single second sleeping.
The smile she’d glued into place was starting to shake at the edges, so she coughed into her hand to give her mouth a rest. When her boss, Delilah, looked up at her again, Presley grinned anew.
Say yes. All I need is a yes.
Presley had longed to escape Florida for as long as she could remember. She’d always wanted to travel the world, visit other countries, meet new and interesting people. But traveling cost money, which had been in short supply. Instead she’d been stuck in Tallahassee as if an invisible force field was keeping her here.
When her boss announced a “friendly” competi¬tion for their branch of Viral Pop a month ago, Presley’s ears had perked. All she had to do was write an article that would go viral and grab lots of new eyeballs. The winner earned a pay-and-title bump—hello, Senior Staff Writer!—and a transfer to any of Viral Pop’s offices in the world.
Pres had practically foamed at the mouth from ex¬citement. She’d been trying to come up with a win¬ning idea over the last week and a half but nothing came. Until her drive home from work last night, when her ex-boyfriend’s song had come on the radio.
Cash Sutherland had left Florida a football star, and was now a country music superstar. Upon hear¬ing his most popular song, a fresh idea had hit her like the title, “Lightning.” Out of nowhere and with enough force to split her in two.
Admittedly, she was a tad torn. She didn’t rel¬ish the idea of revisiting the painful breakup she’d swept under the rug years ago, but on the other hand she really wanted to win. Like, really, really wanted to win.
So she’d sat up until 2:00 a.m. last night writing the proposal Delilah was reviewing this very second.
“This would require you to be out of the office,” her boss stated, her eyes traveling to Presley. Deli¬lah’s usual brand of curiosity-slash-interrogation never failed to intimidate, but winning this pro¬motion and the opportunity to escape Florida was Presley’s lifelong dream. She could handle a little intimidation.
“I’ve worked remotely before,” Presley replied. At home, but still. “I am very good at time manage¬ment. Especially when it’s my own time. Or the time here at the office,” she was quick to add. “I value your time, as well. More than mine. More than any¬one’s.” She pressed her lips together to keep from sounding desperate, the sticky gloss she’d swiped on this morning helping with that endeavor.
Delilah hummed, set her tablet aside and nar¬rowed her eyelids. Then she dipped her chin. “What makes you so sure Cash Sutherland is going to tell you his biggest songwriting secret when he’s dodged that question from every reporter who’s spoken with him?”
Nervously, Presley licked her lips. She wasn’t at all sure Cash Sutherland was going to confess his biggest songwriting secret. Ever since “Lightning” hit the Billboard Top 100, scads of press had been trying to solve the mystery of whom the song was written about. Rumors were rampant. Article after article had named this starlet or that, this singer or the other, and really, given his copious dating his¬tory, it could be any or all of them.
“We’re old friends.”

Excerpt
“While in Africa, I lived in a rather insular world.”
“Since word on the street is you married a prince, a luxurious one, no doubt.”
“Yes.”
A physical wall couldn’t have made Sam’s intentions clearer. Whatever had happened while abroad, she didn’t want to talk about it. But Nick couldn’t resist.
“Yet you’re back here and working. What does your husband think about that?”
“It doesn’t matter. We’re no longer together.”
“Separated?”
“Divorced.”
The tone beneath that one word closed the door on the subject of Sam’s personal life better than King Tut’s sealed tomb. It only made Nick even more curious, about both her failed marriage and her current love life. Now was obviously not the time to talk about it, but one day… Patience was not a virtue Nick knew well, but one he could employ when necessary. Now was definitely one of those times.
His body language remained relaxed but he adopted a businesslike tone. “Whatever brings you back to Las Vegas, your timing couldn’t be better. I need the best and fastest-working designer that money can buy. Before run¬ning off to become an African princess, that was you.”
A grin accompanied Sam’s twinkling eyes. “I’d like to think it still is. What’s going on?”
“A project that has to stay on schedule and a designer who isn’t delivering on the promises she made.”
“How many rooms are we talking about?”
“Not rooms…homes.” Nick noted Sam’s surprised ex¬pression. “This isn’t a hotel design. It’s a series of private island homes being advertised for vacation rental among the world’s most elite.”
“Wow. I had no idea you guys had expanded beyond the original hotel framework. Considering how the hos¬pitality industry is changing, though, it sounds like a smart move.”
“It’s proven to be right on time with industry trends.”
“Does that smirk confirm the obvious, that this was your idea?”
“Still a smart-ass, I see.”
“Takes one to know one.”
“Ha!”
“So I’m right.”
“All of the brothers are involved but yes, it’s more or less my baby. Which means failure is not an option. You feel me?”
“Tell me more.”
Sam leaned forward, unconsciously revealing the slightest peek of a creamy quarter-moon of her breast. When his attention returned to her face, Sam was frown¬ing. Damn. To her professional credit, however, she didn’t comment on eyes determined to rove on their own. She simply adjusted her blouse and sat back, waiting, to learn why Nick had brought her here.
Nick leaned back as well, determined to take con¬trol of a meeting he’d called, ensconced in the comfort of discussing an industry he knew better than he knew himself. Business now, pleasure later, he thought as he began discussing his baby, CANN Isles. There was no way around it, even pushed to the back of his mind. The attraction for one Ms. Samantha “Sam” Price was real, intense and not going away.
Before it was mere speculation. Now she was sure. It shouldn’t have mattered how much she wanted to see her old lover. Not only should Sam have not returned Ani¬ta’s phone call, she shouldn’t have made this appoint¬ment. She shouldn’t be here with Nick. Her body was clear about it even if her mind wasn’t sure. Every cell of her body had lit up, awakened by the irrefutable attrac¬tion that hadn’t dimmed in all this time away. An attrac¬tion that given the sticky situation that even thinking of working with Nick presented, and the increasingly trou¬blesome email and text exchanges with her ex, had no chance of being acted upon.
Being this close to him in proximity was TROUBLE, all caps. Just seeing him relax made her heart skip. She watched the lines on his forehead fade away as he broke into a spiel he’d probably recited a hundred times. Clearly, speaking about the company was his forte, his stomp¬ing grounds, his zone. But that brief look of desire she’d glimpsed before Nick realized he’d been caught staring at her cleavage suggested something impossible. That he still felt the attraction, too.
