I was inspired to write this story after his travels to Savannah, Georgia, New Orleans, Louisiana and Key West, Florida. I was particularly interested in how places like these remained strategic footholds for the Pirates in the area, even one-hundred years after the end of the Pirate Golden Age. Aside from a touch of supernatural occurrences within the novel, this story sheds light on some of the true hardships these Pirates faced and how often many of them didn't live long enough to enjoy the wealth they plundered.
