#Excerpt

She’s not in her usual uniform. No crisp blouse, no blazer. Just jeans and a copper T-shirt. She looks... distracting. Too distracting. The jeans hug her hips and legs in a way that makes it hard to think straight. And the T-shirt? Soft, worn, clinging. I shouldn’t be noticing these things. But I do.

I have an entire system of mental blocks set up around not noticing these things. It’s impossible to never notice her of course. Despite my best efforts, I’m only human. You can’t work with a woman nearly every day for … what was it she said? Nine year?

Well, nine years is a long time to not notice a woman. To not memorize the slope of her neck or the fine texture of her hair. To not learn the scent of her.

Still, when we’re in the office and she’s dressed in a suit, it’s easier to not notice her. Here? In my home? Wearing jeans and t-shirt? The usually difficult task of not noticing one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever encountered is nigh impossible. Especially when she’s looking at me with such fierce intensity. Glaring, really.

She must be wondering why I’m just staring at her.

"You don’t usually dress so... informally," I say, my voice gruffer than I intend.

"We’re not in the office. I’m not wearing a suit." She waits a beat. Again with that expectant air. “Is that all you’re going to say?”

“About how you’re dressed?”

She blinks, shakes her head in a way that makes me think we’re having two different conversations. “No. Not about my clothes. About your fiancée. You don’t have anything else to say about that?”

Now it’s my turn to stare blankly. Yep. Definitely two different conversations.

“Kitty and my relationship with her are irrelevant to the situation at hand.”

“The situation at hand being…” She lets her words trail off in an unspoken question.

Reina Huffman has been in love with her boss for years.

Not that she’s ever told him. Derek Messina—brilliant, exacting, infuriating—barely notices anything outside of work. Or so she thought. Then she learns two things in one day:

He’s just become a single dad.

He’s proposing to another woman.

That’s it. She’s done being the loyal assistant who quietly keeps his world spinning while her own heart breaks.

Derek doesn’t do feelings.

But the thought of Reina walking away hits him like a wrecking ball. He needs her—her sharp mind, her steady presence, the way she makes everything make sense. So he strikes a deal: stay long enough to teach him how to be a father, and he’ll make it worth her while.

But late nights with a baby, stolen glances across conference tables, and one too many almost-kisses blur the line between professional and something else entirely.

Derek’s finally realizing what’s been in front of him all along.

And Reina? She’s about to find out what happens when the boss who never loved anyone decides he’s not letting her go.
