Opposites might attract…

The Brennans and the Gallaghers put aside their one-hundred-year feud every Tuesday for their weekly poker game. This week, the stakes are sky-high. If Declan can tame this wild Gallagher, he’ll have earned every penny.

If they don’t kill each other first…

Betsy can outshoot anybody in Burnt Boot and loves ranching more than anything—until she falls for Declan. He’s fallen for her too. But when she discovers what sparked their courtship, Declan will need a Christmas miracle to save his hide—and his heart.

I love Carolyn Brown. Where else can I find humor, heart and mischief. EXCERPT

Light from all the windows made a yellow streak across the yard at the Wild Horse ranch house. Betsy inhaled deeply and let it out slowly as she parked her truck in front of the house and got out. A blast of cold air hit her face and brought with it the first snowflakes of the season.

She wiped at the flakes stinging her face and opened the front door. A rush of warm air greeted her along with her grandmother’s voice yelling from the well-lit kitchen.

“Betsy, come on in here. I’m having hot chocolate. I couldn’t sleep for thinking about the Thanksgiving dinner, so I got up and started making a list,” Naomi said.

Betsy stopped at the door and leaned against the doorjamb. “It’s getting close to midnight.”

Her grandmother had a deal with a very good hairdresser that kept her red hair beautifully styled and dyed so that not a single root or gray hair ever showed. Her green eyes, the same color as Betsy’s, were set in a bed of wrinkles, and her round face had begun to resemble a bulldog’s with its drooping jaws.

Betsy studied her grandmother carefully. She should look like a bulldog because her nature was exactly like one—grab hold of a bone and hang on for eternity, no matter if something better, like a rib eye, came along.

It took an attitude like that to run this ranch, young lady, the voice inside Betsy’s head said loudly.

Naomi pointed at the clock on the wall. “It is past midnight. Where have you been? Down at that bar trying to pick up a man?”

“No, ma’am, to the last. Yes, ma’am, to the first. I had two beers and…” She stopped before she blurted out that she’d gone to the river and talked to Declan.

“And a shot of whiskey. I can smell it on your breath all the way over here. You’re not drunk are you?” Naomi leaned closer to Betsy.

Betsy shook her head. “I had a couple of beers and shots of whiskey. I barely got a buzz and I’m not drunk.”

“Could you pass a breathalyzer test?” Naomi asked.

“I wouldn’t blow a zero, but I don’t think it’s enough to haul me into jail,” Betsy said. “Why are you being so nosy about how much I drank?”

“You are going to take over Wild Horse when I’m ready to step down. You know that, and it’s time for you to start acting responsibly. You are thirty, Betsy. I want to see you settled in marriage within the next year, and that means less drinking and a lot less visiting the bar,” Naomi said.

Betsy did a half chuckle, part of it escaping her mouth and the other part hanging in her throat. Yeah right! She’d sure take that message to heart and get right on making it happen.

“You think that’s funny?” Naomi asked.

“Little bit.”

“Mavis is now grooming Honey to take over River Bend since Leah screwed up her life by marryin’ that hippie cowboy. And I want you to be ready to take over Wild Horse when I step down.”

Betsy crossed the room, opened the refrigerator, and took out a jar of salsa. “It would be real nice if this wasn’t a competition between you and Mavis. What if I don’t want to run Wild Horse, or what if I want to run it different than you do?” She carried the sauce to the table and went to the pantry, returning with a bag of chips.

“You”—Naomi’s glared across the table at Betsy—“will take care of this the way I’ve taught you. You can be displaced just like Leah if you get any fancy ideas.”

“You mean like hookin’ up with a Brennan?” Betsy dipped the first chip deeply into the red salsa.

“That’s blasphemy in this house, young lady. I’d just as soon shoot you as let that happen,” Naomi said.

“How ’bout if I promise not to hook up with a Brennan, and you donate enough money to the church so we can have a proper Christmas program? Angela is fretting because she’s having a boy and there will be no program for him to play the role of the baby Jesus,” Betsy said.

Naomi shook her finger so hard that it was barely a blur. “That is not going to happen if it means letting the Brennans enjoy it. They shouldn’t have burned down our school. Then, we could have had a program. They have to pay.”

“Be reasonable. Not only are they paying, but so are we, and Angela is upset and the townsfolk who aren’t part of this eternal feud are paying too. Come on, Granny, be the bigger person and show the Brennans that we aren’t—”

Naomi threw up both palms. “Enough! This conversation is over. I’m not giving the church a penny, and any Gallagher who does will be in big trouble.”

“Don’t you ever get tired of this feud?” Betsy pushed harder.

“Hell no! It’s what I live for. I only hope Mavis Brennan dies before I do so I can spit on her grave,” Naomi answered. “They are so high-and-mighty and holier-than-thou because their ancestor was a preacher and ours made moonshine. I’m expecting you to pick up the reins and keep ahead of them, and if you can’t, then I’ll choose another granddaughter to be the queen of Wild Horse. I’m going to bed now and you’d best think about what I said.”

“Yes, ma’am. Married in a year. Runnin’ Wild Horse and keepin’ up the feud like a good Gallagher. Slow down on my drinking. Can I have one beer a week and a shot of whiskey, or do I have to choose between them?” Betsy cocked her head to one side. “Did I forget anything?”

“Don’t you get sassy with me. I won’t tolerate it. Good night, Betsy.”

“’Night, Granny,” Betsy muttered.

“And no pouting either,” Naomi said.

“You ever known me to pout?” Betsy said loud and clear.

“No, you’re like me. You go after what you want. You stand your ground, and you take out anyone who gets in your way however you have to. That’s why you will run this ranch and you will be settled before I turn over the job to you. That means a husband and hopefully a child or two. You aren’t getting any younger. If you got married in a year…”

When Naomi inhaled, Betsy butted in, “And a baby the next year. Tell me, Granny, when will I have time to run a ranch with a husband and a bunch of kids?”

“I managed it and did a good job after your grandfather died. Wild Horse needs a strong woman. You think about that, and don’t disappoint me.”

Betsy crammed chips in her mouth to keep from saying another word. She was tired of the whole conversation, tired of the feud that had been going on over a hundred years, and, most of all, tired of listening to her grandmother issue orders.

Married in a year? It wasn’t damn likely.

Fairly HumanFairly Human by Holly Jacobs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

It has been a pleasure getting to know Blossom, Myrtle and Fern. Their penchant to push the boundaries of their powers in the name of love makes for some hairy situations but always works out in the end. Or does it? Fairly Human, shows that every action has consequences and sometimes the most unexpected turns can bring the biggest blessings. Even fairies deserve happiness. A sweet concoction of nostalgia, comedy and hope that wraps its arms around the reader and pulls them into a world of possibilities.

Magic for JoyMagic for Joy by Holly Jacobs

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Holly Jacobs is a breath of fresh air. She brings her sense of humor and pureness of heart to every novel she writes. Magic for Joy is as creative as it is emotional. Joy has never fit in. Her ability to land in interesting situations, makes her trouble with a capital "T". She cares deeply and makes and that what draws her into the life of Sophie and her frustrating father. It also puts her on the radar of some seriously determined matchmakers. Fairy dust and a handful of magic is what makes for an adorable read.

Miracles for NickMiracles for Nick by Holly Jacobs

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

With a smile on my face and joy in my heart, is the way I enter into Holly Jacobs novels. She knows just the right buttons to push in order to make sure that feeling continues throughout her reads. FOR ME, IT DID! How do you explain the unexplainable? Miracles for Nick takes on that challenge. Logical Nick and cynical Glory have to learn to look with the heart and open their minds to all the possibilities. A group of matchmaking fairies will show them how? My favorite couple in the series so far.

So Good (Ribbon Ridge: Love on the Vine, #1)So Good by Darcy Burke

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

There is sensuality to the business of wine. The taste of it, the preparation of the flavorful blends, are an attack on the senses and loosen inhibitions. It' s only fitting that this aphrodisiac would be at the center of a love story. Brooke and Cam are a complicated duo brought together by an attraction that is tempting and unstoppable from the beginning. Cam is a visionary. His creativity is one of the driving forces behind his vineyard and his determination is on the verge of paying off. Brooke is gusty, ambitious and wary of the man behind the wine. His reputation precedes him and her pasts haunts her. Will the pain of the past stand in the way of the hope for the future? So Good is classic Darcy Burke. Savvy, sexy and heartwarming contemporary romance. Getting to revisit Ribbon Ridge and catch up with old friends and meet new ones made this romance all the sweeter.

WELL HUNG BY LAUREN BLAKELY

Release Date:  September 12, 2016

SYNOPSIS

From the NYT Bestselling author of MISTER O, comes a hot and hilarious new standalone...

Here’s what you need to know about me — I’m well-off, well-hung and quick with a joke. Women like a guy who makes them laugh—and I don’t mean at the size of his d*ck. No, they want their funny with a side of huge… not to mention loyal. I’ve got all that plus a big bank account, thanks to my booming construction business. Yup. I know how to use all my tools.

Enter Natalie. Hot, sexy, smart, and my new assistant. Which makes her totally off limits...

Hey, I’m a good guy. Really. I do my best to stay far away from the kind of temptation she brings to work.

Until one night in Vegas…

Yeah, you’ve heard this one before. Bad news on the business front, drowning our sorrows in a few too many Harvey Wallbangers, and then I’m banging her. In my hotel room. In her hotel room. Behind the Titanic slot machine at the Flamingo (don’t ask). And before I can make her say “Oh God right there YES!” one more time, we’re both saying yes—the big yes—at a roadside chapel in front of a guy in press-on sideburns and a shiny gold leisure suit.

But it turns out what happened in Vegas didn’t stay in Vegas. And now, my dick doesn’t stay in my pants when she’s around. I try to resist. Honest. But the more we try to keep our hands to ourselves, the more we end up naked again, and the more time I want to spend with her fully clothed, too.

The question now is…do I take this woman to be my ex-wife?

REVIEW:  WELL HUNG BY LAUREN BLAKELY

Well HungWell Hung by Lauren Blakely

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wise men say, only fools rush in ....

I Can't Help Falling In Love With You. I have always loved that song, it describes the ups and downs of love in a way that is beautiful and magical at the same time. Lauren Blakely chose the perfect theme for this friends to lovers romance. Wyatt and Natalie have a laid back friendship. She's the brains of the office. She keeps his business organized while brightening up his life. He's the brawn. He loves construction and is great at getting the job done. Together their unstoppable. When a business trip to Vegas goes sideways, all hell breaks loose. A few drinks has this dynamic duo breaking all the rules. What happens in Vegas, doesn't stay in Vegas- with the light of day comes reality and it's up to these two to decide if they can turn a heated night of romance into a love that lasts forever. Well Hung worked for me. The heat levels were off the charts. The romance and backstory had a feel of charm and the first person narrative added a sense of emotional connection that had me falling in love with Wyatt and Natalie.

BIG ROCK BY LAUREN BLAKELY

SYNOPSIS

It's not just the motion of the ocean, ladies. It's definitely the SIZE of the boat too.

And I've got both firing on all cylinders. In fact, I have ALL the right assets. Looks, brains, my own money, and a big cock.

You might think I'm an asshole. I sound like one, don’t I? I'm hot as sin, rich as heaven, smart as hell and hung like a horse.

Guess what? You haven't heard my story before. Sure, I might be a playboy, like the NY gossip rags call me. But I’m the playboy who’s actually a great guy. Which makes me one of a kind.

The only trouble is, my dad needs me to cool it for a bit. With conservative investors in town wanting to buy his flagship Fifth Avenue jewelry store, he needs me not only to zip it up, but to look the part of the committed guy. Fine. I can do this for Dad. After all, I’ve got him to thank for the family jewels. So I ask my best friend and business partner to be my fiancée for the next week. Charlotte’s up for it. She has her own reasons for saying yes to wearing this big rock.

And pretty soon all this playing pretend in public leads to no pretending whatsoever in the bedroom, because she just can’t fake the kind of toe-curling, window-shattering orgasmic cries she makes as I take her to new heights between the sheets.

But I can’t seem to fake that I might be feeling something real for her.

What the fuck have I gotten myself into with this…big rock?

REVIEW:  BIG ROCK BY LAUREN BLAKELY

Big RockBig Rock by Lauren Blakely

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Can a leopard change it's spots? Lauren Blakely did a fine job of proving in the right circumstances anything is possible. Spencer was a douche. His cavalier attitude toward the opposite sex almost had me writing him off as completely hopeless. Yet he did have some redeeming qualities. He cared deeply about his family and when he loved he did so with his whole heart. This was evident from how he was with his best friend Charlotte. He was protective, caring and and now all around good guy. The way he stepped in to help when needed and how he looked after her was irresistible. It was so obvious that Charlotte and Spencer were soul mates. All they needed was a nudge in the right direction. I received an ARC of Big Rock in exchange for an honest review. A reward that is full of surprises.

MISTER O BY LAUREN BLAKELY

SYNOPSIS

Three consecutive weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list! Dig into the hot and hilarious standalone!

Just call me Mister O. Because YOUR pleasure is my super power.

Making a woman feel ‘oh-god-that’s-good’ is the name of the game, and if a man can’t get the job done, he should get out of the bedroom. I’m talking toe-curling, mind-blowing, sheet-grabbing ecstasy. Like I provide every time.

I suppose that makes me a superhero of pleasure, and my mission is to always deliver.

BUT then I'm thrown for a loop when a certain woman asks me to teach her everything about how to win a man. The only problem? She's my best friend's sister, but she's far too tempting to resist--especially when I learn that sweet, sexy Harper, has a dirty mind too and wants to put it to good use. What could possibly go wrong as I give the woman I've secretly wanted some no-strings-attached lessons in seduction?

No one will know, even if we send a few naughty texts. Okay, a few hundred. Or if the zipper on her dress gets stuck. Not on that! Or if she gives me those get-over-here-and-take-me-eyes on the train in front of her whole family.

The trouble is the more nights I spend with her in bed, the more days I want to spend with her out of bed. And for the first time ever, I'm not only thinking about how to make a woman cry out in pleasure -- I'm thinking about how to keep her in my arms for a long time to come.

Looks like the real Adventures of Mister O have only just begun....

For Better or Worse (The Wedding Belles, #2)For Better or Worse by Lauren Layne

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

ARC Review: For Better or Worse (The Wedding Belles) by Lauren Layne

It's not very often that I can picture the characters as actors in a live movie. With Heather and Josh I totally could. Josh has had a hard road and been faced with some tough choices but the uncertainty and adversity has made him aware of his inner strength and allowed him to gain new appreciation for his surroundings. Heather balances out the seriousness with her quirky yet charming personality. I entered this story dreading the serious subject matter and exited applauding the excellent way it was handled. For Better or Worse mixes drama with charisma and ended up surprising me.

EXCERPT

“So this is where the noise happens, huh?” she asked.
Josh’s eyes narrowed as his friend’s hand touched Heather’s back briefly. “Absolutely,” Trevor said. “We’re sorry it keeps you up though.”
“Oh, it’s okay,” she said, waving her hand. “I mean . . . it’s not. But tonight I couldn’t sleep anyway, so you get a free pass. What do you all play?”
“Donny’s bass, Felix is on drums. Josh is lead guitar, and I, as the most important member, have the pipes.”
“Oh! I thought Josh was the singer,” Heather said with a quick glance over her shoulder at him.
Their eyes locked, and Josh felt a flicker of . . . something.
“Ah, is that what he’s telling the women these days,” Trevor joked.
“No, I just . . . I hear him, singing sometimes,” Heather muttered.
“Our boy can carry a tune well enough, but wait until you hear me, love,” Trevor said.
Josh turned away in mild disgust, pulling a beer out of the fridge as Trevor and the other guys coaxed Heather into the practice room, thrilled to have any sort of audience, even a reluctant one.
“Yo, Tanner,” Felix called.
“What,” he called, popping the lid off the bottle and tilting the beer back to his lips as he tried to shake off whatever was bringing down his mood tonight.
“Let’s show Heather here that we’re more than a bit of noise coming through her bedroom wall.”
Josh turned around to see Donny dragging one of his kitchen chairs across the room, disappearing into the practice room.
“All right, love, you just sit down and get comfortable,” Trevor said. “Tanner! Come on, man.”
Josh heard the low strum of Donny’s guitar, heard Felix do a little warm-up rhythm, and knew there was no way of getting out of it. If he refused to play a song now, he’d look like an ass.
Still, his feet didn’t move, and he took another sip of beer.
Feeling eyes on him, he glanced up to see Heather in the doorway, leaning one shoulder against the doorjamb as she studied him.
“Okay, 4A?” she asked.
Her tone was lighthearted, almost slightly reluctant, as though she didn’t want to care about why he was out here alone, feeling oddly itchy with his life.
He appreciated it. He’d spent enough time in the past few years dealing with people who walked on egg hells around him, cooing sweetness. Some of it genuine, some of it not so much.
Heather’s no-nonsense question was refreshing—and exactly what he needed.
He was happy and healthy and living the dream, damn it.
Even if he was no longer sure it was his dream.
“You going soft on me?” he asked, taking one last sip of his beer before setting it aside and strolling toward her.
Heather’s eyes narrowed. “Hardly. I just wanted you to get your shit together so I can see your cute lead singer work his magic.”
He deliberately stepped into the doorway so she couldn’t move in either direction without brushing against him, grinning at her discomfort.
“You’re in a better mood tonight,” he said, his eyes skimming over her crazy curls and relaxed expression. “Why?”
“Believe it or not, I’m not a shrew.”
“Huh.”
Heather shoved his shoulder with a little scowl. “I’m not!”
“Does that mean you’re going to start making banana bread like Mrs. Calvin?”
“Yes, definitely. And coffee cake and sugar cookies and whatever other goodies you might like. All while wearing a frilly, feminine apron.”
“Dare I hope there’s nothing under the apron?” he asked, leaning in slightly.
“Right again!” she said, in mock delight. “I just love to bake naked.”
Josh’s pulse leapt, but Trevor interrupted before the sudden X-rated picture in his mind could turn into a full-fledged fantasy.
“Dude, we doing this or what?”
Josh looked at Heather.
“One song,” she said, holding up a finger. “I may as well see what the music sounds like on this side of the wall.”
She slipped back into the practice room, sitting in the stuffed armchair in the corner. Josh followed her in, reaching for his guitar and slipping the strap over his neck before catching her eye and giving her a wink.
Heather rolled her eyes, and Josh couldn’t hide the grin as he ripped his first chord.
