Jax opened the door, and immediately emptied his lungs. It felt like someone had punched him straight in his gut, forcing all the air out of his body, as he stared at his wife.

At least, he thought it was his wife. It looked like her, mostly, except it was Esther as he’d never seen her before.

The only time she’d worn this much make-up had been for their wedding day, and she hadn’t had those dark, smoky eyes or a bright red lip. Her hair was down, some of it hanging over one shoulder and nearly touching the lacy top of her bra. The black lace

“Thank you.” Real relief was in her voice and eyes, and he realized she wasn’t as sure of this new look as she was pretending to be. So why had she done it? Because he knew this must have been what she and Jen had been up to this evening. He doubted Esther had asked their daughter to help her pick out lingerie, but definitely the make-up…
