“Stay!” Kyrie begs. “Puh-lease. You can help us pick out more decorations.”

“Kyrie, I’m sure Dory has other plans.”

I get it. It’s awkward. He doesn’t want me here.

“Pro!” His daughter holds her little finger up. “I won’t have to walk around with this guy alone.”

Oh, god. She’s making a pros and cons list.

“Good pro. I mean he is wearing a tiara.”

“Hey! I make this tiara look damn good.”

We ignore Porter.

“Con: I’d be interrupting your daddy-daughter time.”

“We live together. It’s okay.” Kyrie waves her hand like my point is silly. “Pro: I’d make a new friend, and Dad says it’s important to make new friends in our new town.”

I can’t argue with that point… “Con: I’m technically a stranger, and you’re not supposed to talk to strangers.”

“How else are you supposed to make friends, then?”

“Oh snap,” Porter whispers, grinning at his daughter’s ability to best me.

“What kind of kid are you raising?”

He laughs. “You wouldn’t believe how often people ask me that.”

“Pro: You get to make a new friend too.”

She doesn’t even know how much I need that.

“Con: I have to be at work in an hour.”

“Pro: It’s going to be really, really fun.”

Con: I’ve seen Porter naked.

Con: You’re not supposed to hang out with your one-night stand and his daughter.

Con: He’s the exact type of guy I could fall for if I ever let myself fall.

“Con: I’m all out of cons.”

Kyrie lets out a loud giggle. “Then I win. You’re shopping!”

I look at her. Her eyes are wide and hopeful, and she takes an extra-long blink, giving her best puppy dog eyes.

I slide my own eyes to Porter, and he’s doing the same.

For her, he mouths. He makes a show of holding his hands out, then tucking them into his jeans, like he’s trying to tell me that’s where they’ll stay.

“All right, let’s shop.”

It’s brief, but the look in Porter’s eyes is unmistakable.

The man Patrick had become filled the hotel room’s foyer.

His broad shoulders, trim waist, and long legs created an impassable mountain in my path. With the light shining from above, I could make him out even better than in the club’s dimmer hallway. My gaze scanned from his blond hair—shorter than when we were young, his light blue eyes, and high cheekbones, to his defined, chiseled jaw and thick neck.

The painful twinge twisting within my chest conveyed what my eyes and mind couldn’t comprehend. I sucked in a deep breath and with my pulse beating in double time, I forced my steps forward.

One and then another.

Patrick didn’t move, speak, or even blink.

A statue in a designer suit, he could have been a Brooks Brothers mannequin in the way his jacket hung perfectly from his frame. The white shirt beneath was starched and crisp, disappearing beneath the trousers and black belt.

I came to a stop inches from his chest, unable to move closer. Now in my bare feet, I was a good ten or more inches shorter than him.

Had he always been as tall?

Stillness filled the hotel room with deafening silence.

Even the hum of the heat disappeared as his gaze moved from my head to my toes. With each passing second, my skin warmed, reminding me that under the robe I was nearly naked, preparing as I’d been for my impending bath. As we continued our silent battle of wills, my nipples drew tight and my core clenched.

It wasn’t fear that Patrick’s proximity instilled.

It was something else, something I’d forgotten.

It had been so long since I had a spontaneous physical reaction to a man that my body and mind were having difficulty processing. One would think this carnal reaction was not uncommon when faced with a handsome mountain of a man. But it was as I pondered this thought that I realized that neither of us had spoken. “Patrick, you found me.”

“Oh, Madeline, finding you wasn’t an issue. The question remains did I want to?”

She squealed like a kid on a roller coaster and ran around to the wingback chair. With one hand she tugged her droopy towel back into place and with the other, she pushed her curls from her eyes. She laughed so hard she snorted, which made him laugh.

Where had his anger gone? How did she do that? Completely disarm him.

“I am vicious and ruthless. You better sleep with one eye open, buddy.”

Right then, his eyes were glued to where her towel looped together. It was a precarious connection. If she moved too fast, it could fall apart. “Girly, you’re the one who needs to watch her back because I’m coming for you.”

He dove and grabbed.

She shrieked.

“Gotcha.” But only her damp towel hung from his hand. She stood bare-assed naked and…damn.

Holy hell.

She tried to cover herself with her hands. “Close your eyes.”

“Not on your life.” He didn’t know where to look first. It was a buffet of enticing tidbits.

“Turn around.”

Her screech hurt his ears, but he could see just fine. Her arms and hands continued their jerky attempts to obscure his view. She seemed to have trouble prioritizing which parts she needed to conceal first.
